3 Tips For Effortless Family Photos

The littles are crying. Big kids are rolling their eyes. You start thinking that maybe you’re not cut out for this, but it doesn’t have to be so hard. Family pictures can be fun, relaxed, and a beautiful moment in time with your family. Here are 3 things you can do to make family photos effortless.

1. PREP OUTFITS THE NIGHT BEFORE

You’ve probably put a lot of effort into finding the perfect outfits for your family to wear. Ease your mind by ironing, steaming, and setting everything out the night before. That way you don’t have to worry about it the day of the session. If you have any littles who might spit up, have a blow out, or otherwise ruin their clothes, get to your session a few minutes early to dress them there. Also, bring a backup outfit just in case. Choose clothing all your kids feel comfortable in. They will be much more excited to get their picture taken.

All of my clients get a free styling session with me. My Mamas also get to choose a dress from my client wardrobe to wear to their session. Then we work together to build the rest of your family’s outfits. And as easy as that, you’re ready to go!

2. PLAN TO GET A TREAT AFTER

I remember growing up when we would go out to get ice cream with my family (I was the 2nd of 7 kids so it was always a big event to go out). It was so exciting! We’d all be on our best behavior for the chance to go to Dairy Queen down the street.

Planning a fun family treat or outing like ice cream, going to the movies, or getting dinner at your kids’ favorite place to eat is a great way to make family photos a fun addition to the day. I’ve seen the results over and over again with families who do this. The kids end up feeling so excited the whole evening. I’ll help hype up the excitement and create an environment of fun throughout the whole shoot for everyone to enjoy together.

3. LAUGH AND LET GO

This is the most important tip I have for anyone getting their pictures done. Your family shares the energy you have. When you feel relaxed and excited, they often do too!

Talk with your family about how much fun we will have, and try not to worry about everything being exactly perfect. Some of the most beautiful moments come when your toddler randomly decides to hug you and you’re willing to live in the moment and hug them back instead of trying to get them to turn around and smile.

Don’t worry, I’ll get the perfect smiling at the camera photo too, but remember to be present for the moment your family naturally creates. That’s where the true magic is.

Family photos can be easy, fun, and magical. Remember, prep to calm the nerves, plan a fun filled day with another treat or activity, and let go of perfection. This will help you find the real perfect moments hidden within your family. I promise these tips will make pictures fun for the whole family. When you get the images back, you’ll remember all the good emotions that came with it. Looking for a family photographer? I’d be happy to help.
